How to Jump-Start a Car

Jump Start a Car

It’s happened to nearly everyone—you’re ready to hit the road, but your car won’t start when you turn the key. A dead battery can be frustrating, but knowing how to jump-start a car can get you back on the Delta road quickly. Follow this guide to learn the proper way to jump-start a car and when to seek professional help from the jump-start car service experts near Ridgway.

The Proper Way to Jump-Start a Car

Before you begin, you’ll need:

  • A set of jumper cables
  • A working vehicle with a fully charged battery
  • Safety gloves and glasses (optional but recommended)

Step-by-Step: How to Jump-Start a Car

  1. Park the working car close to the dead car, but ensure they don’t touch. Turn off both vehicles.
  2. Attach the jumper cables. To do this, connect the red clamp to the dead battery’s positive terminal (+).
  3. Attach the other red clamp to the good battery’s positive terminal (+).
  4. Connect the black clamp to the good battery’s negative terminal (-).
  5. Attach the final black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car’s engine block.
  6. Start the working car—let it run for about five minutes.
  7. Try starting the dead car. If the car won’t jump-start, wait a few more minutes before trying again.
  8. Remove the cables in reverse order. Disconnect the black clamp from the metal surface first, then remove the rest.
  9. Let the jump-started car run. Keep the engine running for at least 15–20 minutes to allow the battery to recharge.

If the car won’t jump-start after multiple attempts, the battery may be beyond repair, and you’ll need jump-start car service or a battery replacement.

When to Call for Jump-Start Car Service

Sometimes, the battery remains dead even after following the proper way to jump-start a car. This may indicate a larger issue, such as:

  • A completely drained or damaged battery
  • A faulty alternator
  • Loose or corroded battery terminals
  • An electrical system issue

If your car won’t jump-start and you’re stranded, don’t hesitate to call a jump-start car service for immediate assistance.
